Vegan Keratin is what we’re chatting about today. The quest for smooth, straight, frizz-free hair leads many women to using products that aren’t necessarily healthy for their hair and their bodies. The presence of formaldehyde in some hair straightening products is particularly alarming. The cruelty free Brazilian company nuNaat now offers a formaldehyde-free line fortified with vegan keratin, derived from plant amino acids. Used for its smoothing and reparative qualities, vegan keratin smoothes and strengthens hair for longer periods of time than keratin derived from animal sources. Basically, the keratin helps to seal the surface of the cuticle and reconstruct the hair fibers.
The five products in this line are the deep moisturizing shampoo, deep conditioner, intensive hair mask, liquid keratin leave-in reconstructor, and serum ultra-shine.
The sodium chloride-free shampoo and conditioner did not disappoint and did a solid job of cleaning and conditioning my hair. The intensive hair mask left my hair feeling very silky. Initially, I was not overly impressed by these formulas, but the effects of using the entire product line for 2 weeks were so noticeable enough that I will continue to use them. I noticed that my hair looked shinier and stronger and I had significantly less ‘flyaways’ than usual. The vegan green keratin is designed to resist rinsing and stay in the hair longer, and I could definitely see this effect from using the products for 2 weeks.
For me, the standout vegan keratin product of this line is the liquid keratin leave-in reconstructor. Both the mask and the reconstructor are designed to provide deep hydration and seal the cuticle of the hair, eliminating split ends. After applying the reconstructor, not only could I feel my hair becoming silky and smooth as I dried it, but it had a surprising amount of volume from a product primarily designed to smooth. I use this product now even on days that I don’t straighten my hair. It was important to use plenty of the reconstructor to achieve truly straight, sleek hair. My biggest mistake was using a tiny dollop, for fear of weighing my hair down. Once I used the correct amount, the stubborn waviness was easy to straighten out.
The serum ultra-shine kicked up the glossy finish of my hair a few notches as well. It did a nice a job of smoothing frizz without weighing my hair down. Using all of the products together really gave a beautiful luster to my hair.
One thing that I think could be improved with this line is the labels on the products. The print was very small and kind of hard to read and there were some ‘off’ translations here and there. (Understandable as this company is not based in North America). The label for the serum instructed me to “blowdry with a flat-iron” and the conditioner promised to give my hair “grace.” It did not affect my opinion of the products at all, but made me chuckle a bit.
The nuNaat website is currently under construction and the vegan Keratin Line is not available for purchase through the website. The best way to purchase these products online is through their Facebook page, at Salon Deliveries, or at select salons. The products are priced between $5.40 – $6.49.

Looks to me like the website is working? I add it to my wishlist :). I have to empty my Keratine complex infusion therapy first that I paid $40 for a little bottle! I rather go to natural products for $7!! Thanks for the review 🙂

I should have specified! The website does work but they will be updating it in the future and adding the Vegan Keratin products at that time. Currently, this line isn't available for purchase directly from the nuNaat website, which is why I directed readers to an alternative site for purchase. Sorry for the confusion!

Hey, my friend wanted to know how he could get straight hair without using some kind of straightening iron, maybe using some kind of chemical that he could rub through his hair whenever he got out of the shower or something that would lay it down flat. Any suggestions?

You say your website is not fully vegan, yet you say it’s cruelty-free. If it’s not vegan, it’s not cruelty-free. It’s that simple.

Sorry you feel that way. We only review vegetarian products that are not tested on animals. And many are vegan as well.

How can this be vegan if it contains milk protein?

I have just read that this product line contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Just an FYI for those avoiding Sulfates.
