It is HOT in Southern California, but even hotter in other parts of the US. Here are some of my favorite products to cool you down and keep you feelin’ super fresh. You’re welcome.
I was at the grocery store today and I almost passed out from the B.O. of a guy waiting at the deli counter. I had to walk away – it was intense! If only I could have tactfully suggested he get “The Guv’ner” from LUSH. The Guv’ner is a powdered deodorant for men, women, teenagers – really anyone. I am in love with this stuff, because you can use it anywhere, it smells great and it’s not made with aluminum and other harsh ingredients. It’s made with calamine powder, charcoal powder, baking soda, lycopodium powder, sage oil, rose absolute, lavender powder, vetiver oil and patchouli powder (naturally antibacterial).
I put it in my shoes and I’ve tried it as an underarm deodorant, but it’s a powder so it’s a little messy to apply. I just read a customer’s comment on the LUSH website. He recommended using a kabuki brush to apply (and storing it in an old mineral or powder makeup container). Um – brilliant! Why didn’t I think of that?
Tea Tree Special Shampoo from Paul Mitchell is so nice when it’s hot out. Tea tree oil, peppermint and lavender give you a nice, cool, tingly feeling, while removing any residue from hair care products. The shampoo is safe for color treated hair, and it’s Leaping Bunny certified. I have only tried the shampoo, but there is an entire line of Tea Tree Special products including hair care products, soap, shaving gel and more.
While we’re on the subject of tea tree oil, I also recommend the Tea Tree Water Toner from LUSH. It’s a spray that will cool you down any time of day. You can use it directly on your face (be warned – this is not a mist – it’s a spray!) or on a cotton ball. This is a great product for combination or oily skin because of the antibacterial properties of tea tree oil. It also has grapefruit and juniper to control oil and kill the nasties. It’s alcohol-free, so it won’t dry out your skin. You can even put it in your fridge if you want to really cool down. Good stuff.
OMG Sport Spray is another amazing multi-tasker. It’s an essential oil spray that you can spray on your sweaty gym clothes (or even the clothes you’re wearing if it’s really hot). It kills the bacteria and neutralizes odors. I also use it to spray my bedsheets and furniture since I have two stinky cats and one very stinky dog. You can also use it on your yoga mat, towels or sports equipment at the gym.
What are some other products you use during the summer? Feel free to share with us in the comments below!

Hahaha, disgusting boy with BO, I can smell your description all the way here in Hawaii. I’m into tea tree lately. In fact, I just came from the shower and I’m loving Organix tea tree shampoo and conditioner, very refreshing indeed.

That is just so nasty! I know that feeling– you feel like you will suffocate if you don’t get out of there fast!!

I’ve been looking for a good underarm deodorant for a long time now because I always get nasty reactions from the harsh chemicals from roll-ons or stick deodorants. I think the Guv’ner powder deodorant will be worth a try. How long does it last before the scent runs out?
