My own obsession started when I was really young. I saw on television that a particular woman’s secret fountain of youth was dutifully applying lotion all over her body after every shower. I figured that if I did the same thing, I’d be able to hold onto my young skin forever (and maybe even tell others later on, “It’s just lotion! That’s the secret! Can you believe it?”)
I’ve been slathering body lotion all over my skin after every single shower for years on end. Call it just a habit, but I’ve gained some beauty insight to know that, with the right lotion, taking the time to care for your skin is never time wasted. Don’t forget that keeping your skin moisturized can assist the body in tissue repair and hydration. Dehydrated skin can lead to an accelerated aging process and slower rate of skin repair.
What is considered the “right lotion?”
Your skin is your body’s largest organ. It’s alive! You want to make sure that any skin moisturizing is done with the best products you can find (and afford.) After all, anything you put on your skin is absorbed right into your system.
You want to look for lotions that are more natural. You want to make sure that they do not contain mineral oil, parabens and are, of course, cruelty free.
Mineral oil is a by-product when gasoline is distilled from crude oil. It is super inexpensive and can be found in many body lotions, baby lotions and oils. It is difficult for your body to absorb mineral oil and it can also clog pores. It is also slows your skin’s ability to eliminate toxins. Overall, it hurts rather than helps your body.
Parabens are an additive in many body lotions and cosmetics. While there is conflicting research about how bad these may or may not be for your skin, it is a preservative that can irritate the skin. While they are in products in very small percentages, it’s best to just avoid body lotions with anything ending in a –paraben on the back of your lotion bottle.
Try these:
J.R. Watkins Natural Apothecary Hand & Body Lotion in Lavender
This lavender scented lotion is very calming and perfect before a dreamy night’s sleep. Available in six other scents, this lotion takes it time absorbing into your skin leaving you moisturized for a very long time.
güd from Burt’s Bees Natural Body Lotion in Vanilla Flame
I’m not a huge vanilla scent fan but this one is nice because it has a hint of spice in it to so it’s not overly sweet smelling. This super silky body lotion is always in my purse! This lotion is currently available in two other scents.
What cruelty free body lotions are you using?

Too much showering is also very drying to the skin, especially hot showers.
I like the Watkins lotion, it’s really good. The Alba unscented lotion is also a good choice for those who don’t want any chemical fragrance in their lotion.

That Gud lotion is AMAZING! Their Vanilla Flame is one of my favorite scents around, I liked it so much that I went out and bought their body spritz after buying the lotion. I can’t recommend it enough.

I love using plain old coconut oil. 🙂 Smells great, absorbs easily and leaves skin nice and soft.
