So, I already know you’re keen on cruelty-free beauty products. That’s why you’re here, right? But, what about products that use ingredients that are safe for you and your kids? As a beauty editor, I’m constantly testing new products, so I switch it up a lot. But, if you’re concerned about the ingredients you’re putting on your skin (rightfully so), you have eczema or another skin condition, you have young kids, or you’re concerned about environmental toxins, check this out. I know when I eventually have kids, I’m going to be looking for products like these.
Free Of… Bath & Body Care is a California-based company started by a man who was taking care of his sick wife. He was helping her eat whole foods and take healthy supplements, but she always complained of nausea after taking a shower. He tried a water filter for the bath, but it didn’t seem to help. So, that’s when the couple took matters into their own hands and created their own line of products that are free of…
- Parabens
- Sulfates
- Petro-Chemicals
- Animal Products
- Added Colors
- Added Fragrances
- Animal Testing
- Botanicals that grow mold easily
I tried out their body lotion, body wash, face wash, shampoo and conditioner and I am pleased to report that they all work extremely well. They lather well (no SLS – just coconut-based cleansing agents), they don’t irritate my skin and they cleanse well without stripping my hair/skin of moisture.
The only drawback to the products (for some) is the scent. Because they don’t add fragrance (which can irritate skin), the products smell… well… natural. I’ve seen so many products that are supposed to be unscented, but they are really just lightly scented. When something is really unscented, you’ll smell the natural ingredients. It’s not a bad smell, mind you, but it might not be what you’re used to. The face wash, shampoo and conditioner didn’t bother me at all, but because I wanted a scented body wash (and I knew my skin could handle it), I added eucalyptus essential oil to the body wash. It worked very well and I was all proud of myself for “making” something (Hey – be quiet – I did too make it!).
All products are cruelty-free and vegan. Most of the ingredients have zeros or ones on the EWG’s cosmetic safety scale. The highest numbers here are for shea butter (4) and Vitamin E (4), which I think we can all agree are pretty darn safe.
