When my fiancé decided to make the switch over to cruelty-free products, I was thrilled and more than happy to lend him a helping hand in getting started. I bought him a couple of items as part of a “Cruelty-Free Starter Kit” that he could use around his house or even wear out for a date night and put them all in a basket. The best thing about the gift? I could use it too!
The Fresh Laundry Smell
The smell of fresh laundry just out of the washing machine and dryer, still radiating warmth and comfort is the perfect filler for cold winter nights or rainy Saturday afternoons. When I moved in with my fiancé, we had to have a serious talk about the laundry situation. I mean, he wasn’t even using fabric softener.
I included laundry detergent in his welcome to cruelty-free starter kit. He was skeptical at first because it was called “laundry soap” instead of “detergent.” I told him not to sweat the small details and let the soap do the rest. Needless to say, he loves it.
The Comfy Sweatshirt
All girls love their boyfriend/fiancé/husband’s favorite big, comfy sweatshirt. That sweatshirt inevitably becomes your favorite too. When my fiancé’s old favorite sweatshirt wasn’t cutting it anymore, I added this one to his welcome kit. It’s 55% hemp and 45% organic cotton and it’s produced by a fair trade workshop in Mexico. I love curling up in this sweatshirt to watch TV or to run to the grocery store. And sometimes, my fiancé wears it too.
The Smell Goods
Listen up guys: girls love cologne. Sure, it’s not the most important thing in the world, but at the end of the day we certainly notice when a guy walks past and leaves a subtle scent. And, while a lot of colognes are tested on animals, many small companies and businesses are sprouting up and stepping up to the plate to offer cruelty-free alternatives.
I bought my fiancé Sandalwood cologne as a date-night approved addition to his welcome basket. It blends the warm scent of Indian sandalwood oil with cedar wood and vitiver for a lasting scent that’s noticeable but not overpowering.
The Spring Cleaning
When I moved into my fiancé’s, it wasn’t spring per se, but I let him know we were going to have to roll up our sleeves and do some cleaning. His repertoire of cleaning products was lacking in just about everything, so I made sure to include a few basic household cleaners in his basket.
I included general cleaners as well as dish soap, dishwashing detergent, floor cleaner and even fruit and vegetable cleansing spray. We spent a Sunday cleaning his bachelor pad and it now sparkles in cruelty-free bliss.
Not Cruelty Free?
If your significant other hasn’t yet thought about switching to cruelty-free products, think about helping him out. The switch doesn’t have to be made over night, but you might put together a gift basket with a few essentials, just to start him off on the right foot. And of course, don’t be afraid to include a little something for yourself too!
