Overtone Extreme Purple Conditioner for your Fantasy Hair – Before & After
Recently I dipped my toe in the waters of the fantasy hair color trend and added some purple to my strands. I wasn’t quite ready to go full throttle purple though. Mostly because my hair doesn’t like to be bleached, and you need to have almost platinum hair to show off super bold hair colors. I was still pretty thrilled with the results. But, unfortunately, vivid hair colors are often very hard to keep from fading.
Some bright colors have more staying power than others, but purple (and the red family) tend to wash out after a handful of shampoos. I wish I could follow the hair gurus’ advice and only wash my hair once or twice a week – or better yet – only use conditioner on my locks, but I don’t like the way that looks or feels on me. So that means, I wash my hair every other day or so, and color fades fast – especially purple color!
If you’re spending a lot of time and money on your fantasy hair, then you want to keep it looking fresh! I asked some of my fantasy hair blogger friends (shout out to Phyrra and Haus of Hounds!) what they used to keep their color looking vibrant, and they all mentioned how much they love Overtone!
Overtone was nice enough to send me samples of their Extreme Purple Daily Conditioner and Go Deep Weekly Treatment. The conditioners are very pigmented. The first time, I tried it without gloves, and I had to do a lot of scrubbing to get the color off my palms. So I definitely recommend using gloves. I tried it on wet hair (after shampooing), and I also tried it on dry hair (no shampoo – just conditioning and rinsing). I left it on for 15-20 minutes each time. The color improvement was good both ways, but it was definitely more prominent on dry hair. Dry hair absorbs more of the dye, and you get a brighter, bolder color. You can see from the photo above that it really works!
I love that Overtone is cruelty free AND vegan! And it has a nice peppermint-y scent that makes you feel fresh and clean. You can use the Daily Conditioner every day, and the Go Deep once a week on your fantasy hair. OR if you want to add color to your natural hair, try the Go Deep on dry hair. You will get a tint if you have dark hair, or a more intense color if you have light blonde hair.
In the end, I went back to “normal hair color” because I am super lazy and not willing to do the fantasy hair upkeep. But if you are dedicated to having that mermaid hair, definitely give Overtone a try. It comes in pastel, bright and deep shades, and you can get them in: purple, orange, pink, blue, teal, green, and even rose gold and silver! At $18 for the Daily and $29 for the Go Deep, the prices are very reasonable, and MUCH cheaper than the hair salon.

Thanks for reviewing this product, I had never heard of it even though I have had fantasy colors in my hair for years! For anyone wondering about the best hair dye that really sticks, like my hair doesn’t be fade in between five week appointments at all. Pravana Locked In is the most amazing stuff, it locks into your hair forming a protective gel lock around the color molecules and doesn’t transfer to other hair strands so you can do multiple colors with no transfer and doesn’t get on your hands, towels, etc. It’s the weirdest most wonderful goo!

Thanks for this great post!
I have one question. Do you use some hair straightener with this product? If yes, what one?

What I’m really after actually is the color you have in the photo of yourself, do you have a regular dye you use for the natural color? My hair is dark brown and I’m trying to find a good Auburn kind of thing to make it pop.
