Guest blog post by Moxie Reviews, my newly found cruelty free beauty resource!
Today’s post is an interview with a very special, very busy Entrepreneur, Indie Lee! Since 2010, she has been in charge, as the CEO and President, of Indie Lee & Co., an all natural skin care line, and has been off and running full-speed ahead ever since.
First, is Indie a nickname? Indie Lee is such a “star quality” name!
I legally changed my name to Indie Lee, but it started as a nickname. My birth name is Lisa, so family members and friends have called me “Lee” for a while. After I was diagnosed with the tumor, people called me “Indie Lee” after my independence and courage. My name change is part of my journey.
I saw that you announced the launch of your website http://www.indielee.com, an “all-natural skin care line.”
Yes, we wanted to create a website that not only served as an ecommerce site, but additionally a resource for consumers who want to learn more about all natural products and chemicals to avoid. It’s my personal mission to change the way everyone looks at beauty, even if it is one ingredient at a time. It is really important to me to develop and nurture relationships with our customers and build a community.
How difficult is it to find people that match your enthusiasm for life and help you to run a successful business?
I am so fortunate to have a strong following. I’ve attracted people with the same mindset, vision, and passion for life and beauty. It’s karmic! Our office has a very work hard, play hard attitude; sometimes, we’ll use extra ingredients to make masks and have a mini spa day!
You were a Founder of several other companies before your newest venture, Indie Lee & Co. Are you still running those businesses along with Indie Lee & Co.?
Before starting this journey, I worked for HBO. I’ve only just started this all natural company; however, the name of our company has changed as time progressed. The Botanical Collection, the original name for the company, acted as a hobby of mine. As I got more passionate, however, we changed the name to Lidareme and then finally Indie Lee & Co., which mirrors our vision of a truly luxurious, all-natural skincare line.
I watched your My Story video on your website. On November 4, 2008, you were diagnosed with a brain tumor. You say you’re “grateful for the tumor…it changed your life for the better.” Help me to understand that, please?!
The tumor basically changed my perspective on life and how precious it is: there’s a reason they call it “the present.” I live everyday to the fullest: I don’t put things off and say, “This is something I’d like to do” anymore. Instead, I do it. At the same time, it made me realize that I had to do something about the toxicity of everyday products. After learning that my tumor may have been caused by environmental toxins and doing research of my own, I took on a platform to advocate and educate. I consulted with professionals to create a healthy, effective, and luxurious alternative to some of the products many use everyday.
Do you feel that your family shares your thoughts about being “grateful” for the brain tumor? If I was a family member I would not be using that term of “grateful,” for such a horrible, life-changing event.
It was a life changing event, but I believe that you don’t grow if you don’t face challenges. I wanted to model a behavior to my family that something positive can come out of something negative. Because of the tumor, my family is stronger and also realizes that life is a gift.
Indie Lee & Co is not only devoted to making the finest, all natural beauty products, but I also see that you want fans to know that you’re a consumer resource with tutorials on how to make natural products; what else do you plan to offer?
I’m very dedicated to empowering and educating others. The Learning Center gives customers recipes (formulations), and other resources to make healthier choices. In the future, I will continue to educate through tutorials and I am planning to go on a media tour making personal appearances and having hands on workshops at specialty locations and colleges across the country. It is especially important to reach the younger generation before they develop brand preferences. They need to know that there are healthier choices.
