Before and After Photos – After the Jump!
When I was in college, my mom and sister once surprised me with an eyebrow intervention while we were in the car one day. I was pretty defensive at the time, but then I realized that what you see in the mirror is not what people around you see. Sometimes you have to see yourself in photos to really know what you look like. I guess the reverse mirror image was throwing me off – my eyebrows were too thin.
A couple of coworkers told me I simply must visit Queen Bee Waxing Salon & Spa in Culver City, CA. I checked it out and was thrilled to see that they use cruelty-free products. They even use vegan nail polish! Jodi Shays, the Queen of the Queen Bees (AKA the owner) is an ex-pat from the UK and you can see evidence of this from her ADORABLE (I want them) Union Jack chairs and her British antique shoe shine chair which serves as the seat of honor for those getting eyebrow waxes.
I contacted Jodi and she was just as sweet as honey (pun intended). She told me to come on down for a complimentary eyebrow wax, and seeing how I was in dire need of some eyebrow assistance, I promptly obliged. I booked an appointment with Dawn Palomino, a resident waxing expert.
When I arrived, the bungalow-turned salon didn’t seem very impressive from the outside (I found out later the bungalow was owned by a psychic who read tea leaves for Clark Gable, Vivian Lee and other movie stars in the ’30s!). But, when I walked in – wow! The place was gorgeous. All blue and white in the entry way – sort of antique French country style. It was very cute. Then, I saw the outside area with the fountain and seating area – even better. Then, as they took me on the tour, I realized there is another, connected building that houses more treatment rooms, and a beautiful waiting area with the above-mentioned Union Jack chairs (that I want to steal).
I really like that the staff and patrons of this salon are unpretentious – not snooty and actually quite friendly. So refreshing if you’ve been to more than your share of “LA” salons. No thank you to that.
So anyway, then I met my waxer-to-be, Dawn Palomino. Dawn was friendly and very patient with my photo-taking. She was fast, but thorough and did an excellent job of shaping my unruly brows. She showed me where I should let them grow in, and where it was okay to pluck between waxes (I’m trying not to overpluck – really I am!).
Here are the before and after pics. I think she did a great job! Oh – and my brows didn’t stay red and sore afterward like they sometimes do. I’ve even had them blister a few times. But, not this time! Hooray!

I only wish these places were around when I was younger. My eyebrows were “shaped” by my roommate in college. They have never been the same!
