How Much Should I Tip at the Salon?

in Body, Hair, Misc on 10/28/11

In the modern world we hardly ever think about tipping, and if we do it is usually in regard to food services. But there are many situations when you should tip for services, including when you have spa treatments. There are a few rules which determine tipping etiquette in this situation, so here they are:

It is generally accepted that you should offer one tip for all services you’ve received, which would be split among the consultants that provided each service, although if the services are provided by the spa owner then no tip is required.

You can tip each beautician separately if you feel more comfortable doing so. The general rule is that you should tip each person 15 to 20 per cent of the total spa visit.

If you are having a treatment at a hotel or spa, you should ask if there is a service charge included in the cost of the treatment. You can also ask them if they prefer to be tipped individually or separately, they will usually let you know how they normally receive tips. Remember, they will be used to receiving tips so you will not embarrass them by talking about tips.

If the standard of service was not as high as you would expect then you are under no obligation to tip. You should also have a word with the manager and tell them that you thought the treatment was not up to scratch; they can then work on the feedback you have given and improve their service.

Tipping is a great way to build up a relationship with a practitioner, and your generosity will be appreciated by the person who has carried out the treatment, whether that is waxing or hairdressing.

I'm so missing life in Europe where we don't have to tip all the time, it's just included in the price!

The cost of salon treatments is soaring. I couldn't believe the money some of these cosmetologists make. I always tip. But when I get charged an arm and a leg I don't feel it's necessary. I think you should give what you can afford. I have tipped when I got a lousy haircut and I tip when I get lousy hair color. It's not always easy to tell until after I try styling my hair myself or get out into the natural light. I think we live in the age of do what you can afford.

I think that it all depends on the quality of service that you get. If it is great, than don't go cheap on the tip. Tips help these women keep their business alive. Of course you don't have to go too much. I am more of a 13% type. The treatments are already high in price.

In my point of view giving tip to your service man/woman could be very beneficial for you when you revisit that Salon again. If you give a good tip to them, than they will also try to give you their excellent services.
