This post was brought to you by Tom’s of Maine.
I’m very happy to have been invited to be a member of Tom’s of Maine’s Circle of Goodness! Tom’s of Maine has been in business for 40 years (6 years longer than I’ve been alive!). They were started by Tom and Kate Chappell. Unable to find natural personal care options for themselves and their children, in 1970 Tom and Kate decided to create and sell their own. They began with a $5,000 loan from a friend and the philosophy that their products would not harm the environment.
I remember my first experience with Tom’s of Maine toothpaste. I worked at a small health food store during high school and college. When I first tried it, I was surprised by how mild it was (no burning or tingling or crazy mint blast). I tried it for a while and found that I really liked it. That was 15 years ago, and the products keep getting better. Now you can find them on every drugstore and chain store shelf! Most other toothpaste brands are not natural or cruelty free. And they have branched out with mouthwashes, soaps and deodorants!
“When we first started out, this brand-new idea of natural products and sustainable companies seemed a little crazy to some. In the years since, though, more and more people have begun to believe, like we do, that nature can provide many of the health benefits we need — and that companies should minimize their environmental impact while working towards positive change in our communities. Together, we’ve really started to make a difference!”
– Tom and Kate Chappell, co-founders
In 2006, Tom’s of Maine was acquired by Colgate-Palmolive. This doesn’t mean they have changed their strict vegan and NO ANIMAL TESTING standards or their values and beliefs.
“Our support of non-animal-testing models also includes the belief that we don’t need to use animal ingredients to create effective products. Just one example: glycerin, used in toothpastes and soaps, is often made from animal ingredients, but ours is vegetable-based.” – Tom’s of Maine

I remember when “Tom’s of Maine” first started with their toothpaste, but I didn’t realize that was 40 years ago! They’re the best!

If only their toothpaste were easy to come by in the UK!
