Toms of Maine Cruelty Free

Tom’s of Maine – a natural approach to dental care.

If there is one thing I take seriously it’s definitely going to be my dental care. After working in the dental industry for over 10 years I’ve seen all sort of the things and the outcomes of not taking proper care of your teeth. Trust me, your teeth are something to invest in, because if you ever need dental work it will cost you an arm and a leg! Even with insurance, repairs and restorations can take a bite out of anyone’s wallet.

Two things we need on a daily basis, toothpaste and floss. That’ll keep your dental visits to a minimum!  Tom’s of Maine has a wide selection of toothpastes for toddlers, children and adults and a good floss to partner with it.  I was sent the Children’s Flouride-Free Toothpaste in Silly Strawberry, along with their antiplaque dental floss to test out. While I usually stick to “adult” versions of toothpaste I should preface this review by saying that it does you no harm to use a children’s toothpaste –you may just get a tastier option to use!

The Silly Strawberry toothpaste was awesome.  I loved the taste and can easily see my friend’s 3 year old taking to this like candy. I remember flavored toothpastes from the ’80s and still shudder at the thought of banana…..and I love all things banana! This toothpaste has a flavor that any adult or child could love. And being fluoride-free you can rest assured that there are no ingredients that will cause tummy discomfort if swallowed. I sometimes have issues with fluoride burning my extra-sensitive lips so this is definitely a plus for me!

The antiplaque floss is different from most flosses that I’ve tried in that its thicker in my opinion. It is considered a “flat” floss where it should help glide between teeth at a certain angle easier but I did feel the snap-through when using it. While I was worried that it may be too thick to fit between my teeth, my gums were safe from harm and it left behind a minty hint of freshness after use. The wax covered string helps slide the floss between the teeth with ease helps gives the minty taste. I kept this pack in my purse so I can floss on the go – I just hate when I have something stuck between my teeth and I keep trying to get it and can’t!

Overall, I really liked both products although I usually like to use a whitening or brightening toothpaste since I am a coffee and tea drinker. I may try the Simply White or Botanically Bright next time around!

They’re owned by Colgate Palmolive and they test on animals. I would never use this product !!

Tom’s of Maine was bought by Colgate yes (I wish they hadn’t), but nothing from the Tom’s of Maine line is tested on animals and they continue functioning as they always had, per the agreement when the were being purchased. While it would be a million times better if they were still an independent company, buying their products at least shows Colgate that there are people out there willing to pay for cruelty-free, natural products. And it’s getting harder and harder to find products that aren’t owned by some animal testing corporation. It’s like they are trying to buy up all the good companies and taint them in some way.

I like the organic toothpaste, the name branded ones are good and all but still allowing tooth enamel and harsh chemicals to whiten my teeth. Thanks for sharing this!

The non fluoride certainly works well with the flavor! Especially for children who are still learning about dental hygiene.

I use Tom’s of Maine Botanically Bright because I don’t like fluoride, and it’s without other harmful chemicals and it does works really well.
