UPDATE: Demeter is not cruelty free. The company is now selling in China and can no longer be considered cruelty free.
Oh Demeter – how I love thee. I have what I call a “dog nose.” I have a super strong sense of smell, and scents have always been very important to me. A scent can easily change my mood in a split second. When I first read about Demeter fragrances in a magazine (I was probably in high school at the time), I knew the founder was a kindred spirit. Anyone who would create fragrances called “Laundromat” and “Dirt” had to be awesome.
In the spirit of Halloween, I wanted to share these Demeter scents with you.
1. Funeral Home – Yes there is a actually a scent called Funeral Home. To me, it smells exactly like a funeral home (not that I’ve been in too many…) or like a dusty old library. This is how Demeter describes it: “Funeral Home is a blend of classic white flowers: lilies, carnations, gladiolus, chrysanthemums with stems and leaves, with a hint of mahogany and oriental carpet. This scent actually started out to be Flower Show. Now our founding perfumer personally did NOT like most white flowers so this was a tough fragrance for him to develop. When a friend first smelled this one and exclaimed: ‘it smells like my Grandfather’s funeral… call it Funeral Home!’, we did.” In my opinion, it’s less like flowers and more like an old building.
2. Thunderstorm – This is one of my all-time favorites. Being from Louisiana, but living in California, I don’t get a lot of thunderstorms anymore. I actually miss them! I love the scent of wet dirt right after a rain and the exciting feel of ions in the air. That is exactly what this scent smells like. I like to spray it around the house and put on a CD with rain and thunderstorm sounds. So soothing!
3. Pumpkin Pie – I don’t think I could let a holiday season pass me by without having some pumpkin pie! Avoid the calories by taking a sniff. If that’s not enough, maybe it will turn your man on. “According to a study at the Monell Institute in Philadelphia, the smell of Pumpkin Pie increases the arousal level in men by 40%. Maybe our mothers and grandmothers intuitively knew this as truth; the Farm Journal’s Complete Pie Cookbook, circa 1965, says it best: ‘Men love Pie’.”
4. Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups – My favorite chocolate candy!! “A sinful combination of creamy peanut butter and rich milk chocolate that no one can resist, balanced to be wearable, as only Demeter can.” It smells more like a peanut butter pastry or pie than Reese’s, but still delicious.
5. Tootsie Roll– My favorite “fake chocolate” candy! I think you either hate Tootsie Rolls or love them. I love ’em. “A luscious and delectable combination of fudge, caramel, chocolate and vanilla that brings back childhood memories of simple and easy pleasures.” Mmmmm! Trick or Treat!
6. Caravan NYC – Demeter Fragrances partnered with Caravan Stylist Studio to launch this limited edition fragrance – Caravan for Fashion’s Night Out. 50% of proceeds from sales of the fragrance are being donated to charities including the NYC AIDS Fund for Fashion’s Night Out and Made in Midtown. “This unique, sparkling scent with peach skin, strawberry leaf, caramelized sugar and ylang ylang captures the bright optimism and creativity that is the essential character of the NYC Midtown Garment center.” This one is super girly – very sweet and flowery.

I hope you will update your posts to indicate that Demeter is no longer cruelty-free – they sell in China now, so they test on animals.
