Follow these tips to treat post-summer skin from the experts at Miami Beach Plastic Surgery Center and MedSpa, Dr. Tachmes and Lead Esthetician Tina Cappiello.
Brown Spots/Uneven skin color:
After a summer of fun-in-the-sun, any pre-existing sun spots (freckles, moles, brown birthmarks, “age spots”) are going to look darker and larger. Simply reducing your sun exposure will improve their appearance by 20- 50%, depending on your ability to tan. The easier you tan, the longer it’s going to take for your spots to fade naturally. In fact, if you’re naturally dark and /or older, some of your summer-fun spots won’t ever fade without treatment. Even worse, if you’re an olive-skin-type female, or are pregnant, you might bid farewell to the summer with melasma, or “mask of pregnancy.” This condition creates stubborn, brown patches on the face.
- What you can do: (1) get less sun (2) use daily sunscreen (this will speed the fading process along)
- What a med spa or dermatologist can do: (1) chemical peels (2) laser treatments for specific types of sun spots (melasma does not respond to laser) (3) combination of the above
Cost: peels $250, laser $500-$750, products $100-400
Broken Capillaries:
These are very common after a summer full of sun usually seen in lighter skin types. These do not tend to fade after the summer. Once the capillaries “break”, they stick around. Common areas include the nose, cheeks, chin, and sides of the upper neck.
- What can you do: (1) use concealer make up, or other makeup specifically designed to conceal red color.
- What a med spa or dermatologist can do: Laser treatments work great, except in the neck. Usually one to two treatments is necessary. Anesthetic cream can be applied before procedure. Treatment usually takes 5-10 minutes. Redness and slight swelling is possible for a few hours.
Cost: per treatment around $500
Dry Skin:
Usually does not appear until many years of sun. Of course, the lighter skin types will develop dry skin sooner in life. Avoid harsh soaps, excessive cleansing and prolonged, hot showers. Apply rich moisturizer after the shower, repeat at night if necessary.
