Matte Velvet Nail Polish
Zoya has been a nail care brand that I have a long history with, so when I was invited to swatch their Matte Velvet 2015 Winter Holiday Collection I accepted without hesitation. Zoya is a cruelty free, 5-free nail polish brand that has a broad color and finish range to choose from — and has one of the best nail polish removers I have ever come across on the market! Although this review is about the latest polish collection, if you haven’t tried their Zoya Remove Plus before, get to ULTA and pick up a bottle, you’ll thank me later.
The Zoya Matte Velvet 2015 Winter Holiday Collection is a set of six new opaque matte shades that work best without a base or glossy top coat to truly get the “velvet” look on on your nails. To be honest, I had no idea it would work best without a base coat until I started writing the review after swatching so all of my swatches are with a base coat since I have ridges in my nails that I can’t perfectly buff down. Also, you should be aware that typically matte polishes such as these will not have extended wear time, and should be planned accordingly. So if you want to flash some velvet tips at that party at the end of week, plan to do your nails the day of or day before to avoid scratches or chips since there is no thick top coat you can wear over it. Now let’s take a look at the colors in this collection!
Aspen – Described as a sparkling arctic white that has micronized pearl to add texture to this bright white. This color catches a beautiful sparkle in direct sunlight and in my opinion needs two good coats to get opaque enough to hide your nail line.
Sue – A soft champagne gold that also has some pearl swirl in the formula to create that velvet look. I found this color to be a bit sheer (the most out of the bunch) but a gorgeous delicate white gold color that I would wear year round. P.S I think this would look awesome in a bridal look!
Honor – A cool tone, emerald green with a pearl swirl as well. This is a solid opaque color, but looks best with two coats instead of just one. This one really makes me think Christmas time and has a nice sparkly fleck to it in the sunlight.
Amal – My favorite from the entire collection is a warm crimson red with ruby red pearl fleck. This one makes me think of Dorothy’s slippers and looks gorgeous on! Not the best color to wear when you plan to lift weights in your boot camp class the next morning, but still so pretty on! Would look awesome on the toes peeking out of peep toes, don’t you think?
Iris – A deep, warm amethyst color with fuchsia pearl fleck swirled in. That pearl fleck is best caught in the sunlight or when you decide to top it with a glossy coat instead of keeping it matte. The color best reminds me of ornaments we had on our tree when I was younger that looked so pretty with the lights hitting it.
Yves – A deep, cool sapphire with royal blue pearl fleck. Maybe my hand was getting tired, but I had a harder time getting this color to be “smooth” over my ridged nails. It’s beautiful but a color you need to be careful around the cuticles since its a dark color that likes to stick to the skin no matter how many times you go around the edges with a clean up brush.

I think this collection has a nice variety of winter colors that include icy light colors and deep jewel tones to fit every nail polish lovers dreams. Best of all, you can keep them matte or top them with a nice shiny top coat to get that glossy look if you desire.
