How to Curl Straight Eyelashes

How to Curl Straight Lashes

If you have stubbornly straight eyelashes that won’t curl like mine, you’ve probably wished you could hairspray your eyelashes to hold the curl.

If you follow the instructions of curling your eyelashes then applying mascara… the wetness of the mascara usually takes the curl away. You’re left with volumized and lengthened, but straight lashes. So then you try curling your eyelashes then applying mascara, only to be left with clumpy eyelashes and a sticky eyelash curler.

Either way, it’s not pretty. While we can’t literally hairspray our eyelashes (I’ve tried.. don’t ask), here’s the next best thing.

1.    Apply clear mascara (Jane Iredale has a good cruelty-free clear mascara) to completely dry uncurled top eyelashes. Apply both under and over top lashes. You can substitute clear mascara with brow gel if you have that handy.
2.    Wait until your eyelashes are completely dried. Apply makeup or style your hair while you wait.
3.    Once the clear mascara is completely dried, curl your lashes as you normally would. Notice how easily they curl? Separate your lashes if needed.
4.    Apply black cruelty free mascara without fear of your eyelashes losing it’s curl!

The clear mascara basically acts as a styling gel and holds the curl even when you apply a wet coat of mascara. Happy eyelash curling everyone!

Even before I read comment above I was wondering about this myself. But maybe the clear ‘mascara’ wouldn’t induce breakage since it’s more pliable? Like hair gel to set a blow dry? I don’t know, will have to look into it…

I have a little tealight candle next to my makeup mirror and use it to gently heat my plastic curler… works perfectly for me everyday. Just gotta be careful. I’ve been doing it forever and although it sounds crazy, it works so well! I have CRAZY STRAIGHT eyelashes and it curls em up purdy. 😉

Sorry but this is a TERRIBLE idea… even if clear mascara leaves lashes more supple than regular mascara, using any product before lashes are curled is liable to break them. Do yourself a favor instead and apply a waterproof mascara literally DIRECTLY after curling your lashes – do NOT use product before curling them !!!

I agree with you. This will harm the mascara and making it unable to be normal anymore.

I dont know if this is a good tip or not, but I will try it…My tip could also be unhealthy for lashes, so I only do it occassionally, when I want to look more special… not daily…I apply a little heat to my eyelash curler via a hairdryer. Always test it first to make sure it is warm not hot when applying to lashes because you could get burned. It really works at setting the curl before you apply your mascara. I never use waterproof mascara because I find that it tends to dry out my lashes & makes them brittle & more susceptible to breakage. That could also be an issue with the heated curler, so its not something you would want to do everyday.

What she is saying works. It is better not to say anything and be kind. I have used this method and have had zero problems. It isn't as harsh as a waterproof. I would never even use a waterproof as that is harsh on your eyelashes. I say what she is saying is straight on right and I know as I have done this since the clear mascara has come out. Oh wait, I use the lash building white first then curl. Not a breakage!

Thank you for both your ideas and we are all here together ladies!

I use the same technique with my curler & blow drier – works like a charm.

I've been wondering this! I'm so new to curling my eyelashes anyway lol but yeah they just didn't seem all that…curled, so I bought some falsies to try (new to those too). I don't do my eyes that often but I'll be gentle 😉

LOVE clear mascara–use it on my brows as well!

I have long eye lashes but they are also hard to curl. I have a heated eyelash curler that worked fine at first but then my eyelashes went straight again. I will try this method and hopefully it will work for me too.

Thanks for the tip! Im gonna try this one. Waterproof mascara also works! The curl fades a bit after some hours but it holds the entire day (even over night!).

Hmm. The tealight idea sounds intriguing, but it might be a little dangerous for me, since I have energetic cats who might leap into my lap or bump my arm at any moment.
I’d love to curl my stubbornly straight lashes, but it just isn’t worth my kitties and/or me sustaining a burn.
That said, I use a heated wand-type lash curler with good results, IF I don’t comb through my lashes after curling them. I discovered the hard way that doing so makes the curl fall right out.

Thank you so much! I have long, fine, ultra-straight lashes This extraordinary trick results in PERFECTLY curled lashes that LAST ALL DAY . . . and protects lashes as well when using a ‘nourishing’ clear formula.

I’m intrigued, because I use a heated eyelash curler, and there is *still* a little section of lashes directly above my right pupil that Will. NOT. Curl. From the edge of the iris outward, my lashes curl and fan out nicely, but that middle section insists on drooping. Mother Nature can be a real shrew, at times. 😡
