Today is National Vitamin Day! Did you take your multivitamin today?
I take a lot of supplements for 3 reasons:
- My diet is not always that…um…diverse.
- Some supplements work better in higher doses (i.e. I’d rather take one EGCG capsule rather than try to drink 50 cups of tea a day).
- Some really beneficial herbs are not part of a “normal” diet (Cat’s Claw anyone?)
My pledge for 2013 is to take better care of my body. That means eating more salads and smoothies, being more active, getting more sunlight, losing about 20 lbs and even getting more facials and massages – gotta take care of my skin and my “blogger back.”
And, even though I take a lot of supplements on a daily basis, sometimes I’m not consistent with what I’m taking. That needs to change. For example, calcium has never been a priority for me, but I know it should be. Studies have found promising results for treating symptoms of PMS with calcium, and that should be all the reason in the world for me to take calcium supplements on the regular! I’m sure my boyfriend would agree…
Vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs and other supplements can be great for your hair, skin and nails too. Instead of spending all your money on expensive creams and treatments, try putting part of that beauty budget into a daily supplement. A little can go a long way.
I’m very curious to try the new VitaMelts by NatureMade. They dissolve in your mouth so you can take them without water. I’m much more likely to take a new supplement daily if I don’t have to add another giant horse pill to my stash!
Here are the VitaMelt options:
-
Vitamin C – available in Juicy Orange (great for everyday health or when you feel a cold coming on)
-
Energy – available in Mixed Berry (a major dose of B12 – great for vegans or anyone undergoing stress ::raises hand!::)
-
Vitamin D – available in Creamy Vanilla (great for Golems like me who don’t get enough sunlight – and normal people who sit in offices all day – actually Vitamin D deficiency is VERY common these days)
-
Sleep – available in Chocolate Mint (Yes! Melatonin is my best friend. I take 10 mgs a night – which is a pretty high dose – start with 3 mg and see how it works for you.)
-
Relax – available in Green Tea Mint (L-Theanine – an amino acid that helps with relaxation – I’m seriously thinking about running out to the store to pick some up right now!)
-
Zinc – available in Honey Lemon (Zinc is well-known as an immune system booster, but did you know it also keeps acne at bay? It’s my secret weapon.)

Great article, and reminder. I’m so bad about my vitamins. I usually have a green smoothie for lunch, so my new goal is to take my vitamin with my smoothie everyday.

Another thing that we can do before taking any of the nature made vitamins that we can find is to do our own research and do a background check of the natural vitamins that we wish to take so we will know exactly where they are made from and what they can do for us if we take them regularly.
