Style has never been confined to a catwalk or a catalog page – it lives and moves with the rhythms of the people. Now more than ever, fashion is at our fingertips as we watch trends emerge in real time on our social media feeds. On Instagram, where anyone can put together a look and share it, the fashion world is interactive, drawing inspiration from every corner of pop culture. But as always, some trends stand above the rest, inspiring thousands of DIY spinoffs and creative interpretations. Here are the top vegan fashion trends taking over the ‘gram:
1. Casual jock
Leaving the house in sweatpants isn’t taboo anymore. It’s on-trend fashion. Instagram fashionistas are combining baggy loungewear with sleek workout gear to create comfy tomboy ensembles that aren’t just for the gym. The high-end sneaker craze continues to grow, and nothing complements a fresh pair of shoes better than a sporty uniform of logo-heavy track jackets, joggers, and sports bras.
2. Dare to layer
Instagram is as much about the snapshot as the outfit itself. Popular Instagram fashion stars put together envy-inspiring ensembles by experimenting with lighting, texture, and color combinations. They layer multiple pieces, pairing vintage with modern, soft with tough. Especially popular are duster jackets, blazers, and unexpected accessories.
3. Comfy Parka Coats
Taking a tip from the midwest and west coast, long parkas are popping up everywhere – even in Los Angeles this winter season. It may not be that cold here, but when it drops below 70 degrees, we all start complaining about the bitter cold! I’ve seen lightweight parka puffer coats (especially in army green) in Top Shop, Forever 21 and many other on-trend shops. It’s definitely a ’80s/’90s vibe, but one I actually like. I love my olive green Madden Girl parka with a faux fur hood from Kohls! I like to wear it open over several layers with jeans and boots. A great weekend outfit!
4. Jean queens
Denim – in all of its glorious washes and shades is here to stay. If you’re bored with skinny jeans, there are slouchy boyfriend jeans, playful denim skirts, and punky jean jackets. Plus, it’s easy to get DIY with your denim and craft one-of-a-kind pieces for your wardrobe.
4. Pretty in pastels
Instagrammers are embracing baby pinks and powder blues, with nods to Japanese fairy kei fashion and the gleefully girly pop divas of the 2000s, among others. The more adventurous even dye their hair in cotton candy shades.
5. Sassy statements
Quirky phrases in plain lettering give an outfit that unforgettable edge. Instagram trendsetters make their own statements with personalized nameplate necklaces, baseball caps, and sew-on patches.
It’s not hard to see that ‘90s and early 2000’s revival is in full swing on Instagram (I’m feeling old!). Current trends reference everything from Missy Elliott music videos to Cher Horowitz’s iconic outfits from “Clueless.” But the effect of the digital age is inescapable. For every retro denim jacket, you’ll see a futuristic pair of Nikes and a t-shirt printed with hyper-abbreviated text-speak. There’s always something new to discover as artists, celebrities, and your friends interact with the same trends. So whether you have 20 Instagram followers or 20,000, style inspiration is just a scroll away.
