Do you love vintage style as much as I do? Then you need to check out Besame Cosmetics. The brand was created in 2004 by artist, cosmetic historian, and designer Gabriela Hernandez. The products are non-toxic, paraben-free and cruelty free, and all products are made in the USA. The packaging is TO DIE FOR! Everything is vintage-inspired, and has that old Hollywood glam look. The products are modern representations of actual makeup used by women in the 1920’s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s.
I was excited to try out one of Besame Cosmetic’s signature lipsticks, as well as the Cashmere Powder Compact and two color correcting powders – Violet and Vanilla.
The Classic Color Lipstick in “Red Velvet” is inspired by starlets from the 1940’s – specifically, 1946, to be exact! It’s a true, deep red, with a semi-matte finish. The formula is nourishing with Vit C, squalene, macadamia oil, chamomile and aloe. The gold packaging with camellia flowers is beautiful! I’m impressed by the color payoff, but the shape of the lipstick itself took a little getting used to!
Apparently this is the shade that Haley Atwell wears as Peggy Carter on Marvel’s Agent Carter (which takes place in 1946). I think that says a lot about the historical accuracy of the brand when Hollywood makeup artists are choosing it for shows like this.
This color is gorgeous – just a little bright on me. I think I would do better with Besame’s more orange-y shades like Tango Red, or even the darker red, Noir Red. They have such a nice selection, there’s something for everyone!
The Besame Cosmetics Cashmere Powder Signature Compact is adorable! It’s hard to tell from the photo, but it’s very petite – the powder itself is about an inch in diameter. It’s just so pretty – and has a velvety, matte finish. It’s the perfect powder to keep in your bag to touch up those oily spots during the day.
It even comes with a red velvet bag to keep it safe and sound when traveling. It’s so cute – if you take it out of your bag in public – all the women in the area are going to want to know where you got it!
The shade shown here is “Light.” It also comes in Porcelain, Medium and Dark. And the compact is refillable!
Besame Brightening Violet Face Powder is a lightly purple toned color correcting powder. It’s very light with just a hint of violet, and the powder actually smells like violets (a nice hint – not overwhelming)! It comes with a powder puff, but I found it easier to apply with a brush for a lighter touch.
The powder is matte, but gives a bit of a sheen to brighten up a dull complexion. It is meant to correct yellow and red areas. You can buff it over your entire face with a kabuki or other large brush, or try dabbing a bit of it on acne or red spots with a small concealer brush. You can also try putting a bit under your eyes or other dark areas to brighten. For undereye circles, I prefer a yellow-based powder, which brings us to the next product below!
Besame Brightening Vanilla Face Powder is a yellow-tinted color correcting powder. It’s got a velvety feel and a matte finish. It’s recommended for medium to dark skin tones.
It has an amazing vanilla scent (I’m trying not to lick it as we speak), and can be applied with the enclosed powder puff or a brush. You can use it sparingly to set concealer under your eyes in order to mask dark circles. Or, you can use it over foundation to brighten.
All in all, I’m very impressed with Besame Cosmetics. The attention to detail in their packaging and formulations is incredible. Whether you’re a pin-up lover, old Hollywood movie buff, or just love beautiful cosmetics, you will love Besame. You can find the products online or at Sephora.
There’s a brand new pink-tinted powder called Vanilla Rose with a rose scent (OMG!) out now. Check out the latest from Besame by following them on Instagram (lots of beauty inspiration)!
