Re-fillable Bath Products That are Natural, Eco-Friendly and Cost Effective
When I stayed at a fancy-pants hotel in Vancouver last year, I remember thinking that I loved their refillable shampoo, conditioner and body wash pumps. I hate throwing away all those tiny, half-used bottles – it seems like such a waste.
We throw away SO MUCH garbage in this country, and only 5-10% of the plastic ever makes it to a recycling center. And even if it gets recycled, it usually ends up in a landfill or in our lakes and oceans at some point. Plus, when you recycle a plastic bottle only 10-20% of it can actually be successfully recycled and what is recovered is often downgraded into another form of single use plastic.
According to National Geographic, if we don’t change our ways by 2050 there will be 12 BILLION metric tons of plastic in landfills and waterways. There will be more plastic than fish in the ocean! Say what? That’s a staggering amount of destruction to our planet.
Above is a pic of Maui, Hawaii, from my birthday trip in April. Can we PLEASE keep our oceans looking this beautiful and not full of plastic and garbage? Watch this video to see what is currently happening.
I was intrigued when I saw my blogger friends talking about Plaine Products. This is an American company started by sisters, Lindsey McCoy and Alison Webster, that makes high quality body wash, shampoo and conditioner in non-plastic (aluminum) bottles. Not only that, but you can order refills on a subscription basis (every 2, 3, 4 or 6 months), so you never run out of your essentials. When your new package comes, you just put your pumps on the new bottles, ship the used bottles back (postage is paid), and they will clean, sterilize and re-use them for the next customer. How cool is that?
The products themselves are very high quality. The scent is to die for! It’s a spa-like scent made with rosemary, mint and vanilla. I don’t know if there’s one scent that will please everyone, but this has to be pretty darn close! I can’t get enough of it.
The shampoo and conditioner are great for all hair types – not overly moisturizing or drying. The shampoo is made with organic aloe, coconut oil, safflower seed oil, Irish moss, papaya, pineapple, chamomile, rosemary, Vit E, green tea, vanilla and mint. The conditioner also has shea butter, mango butter, AHAs, camellia oil and jojoba oil.
The body wash is my favorite! As I mentioned, the scent is DIVINE. It lathers (even though there’s no sodium lauryl sulfate) and it rinses off quickly and easily. There are no “bad ingredients” in it, so I feel comfortable using it on my whole body. And, I LOVE having a body wash in a pump – it’s so much easier to use in the shower. It’s actually hard to find a cruelty free body wash in a pump. I’m sure it’s cheaper for brands to use squeeze bottles, but I would gladly pay a little more for a healthier, more convenient, eco-friendly, and cruelty free alternative!!
The products are hypoallergenic, baby safe, color safe, vegan, and of course, cruelty free – no animal testing by the company or its suppliers. It’s perfect for all skin types, including sensitive skin. There are no harmful chemicals (no PEG, PG, parabens, sulfates, dyes, synthetic fragrances or petrochemicals).
First time bottles are $30 each (and come with the pumps). You can get refills for as low as $24.17 each – it’s cheaper when you bundle more than one product together. Your refills don’t have to be frequent – it depends on how much you use, and if you’re a whole family or a single person. You can get refills every 2, 4, 5 or 6 months, and the low price does not change. There are also $5 travel sizes if you want to try out the goods before you commit.
Stop by Plaine Products and check out their products. I think you’ll be impressed!

I like this idea. At first, when I read that it was re-fillable, I thought they would send bags to refill the bottle. But then that isn’t eco-friendly. I love that the company makes it easy for you to return your empties.
