Is NYX Cruelty Free?
A lot of chatter has been going on lately, and some of you have asked – is NYX cruelty free or not? Well, the short answer is that nothing has changed recently (as of July 2017) – NYX Cosmetics says that they are NOT selling in China (a country that requires animal testing for imports) as rumors had stated. They do not conduct animal testing, their ingredient suppliers do not conduct animal testing, and they are not sold in countries that require animal testing.
They are, however, owned by L’Oreal, a non-cruelty free parent company. I personally support brands owned by non-cruelty-free parent companies as long as they remain cruelty free, use only cruelty free suppliers and labs, and sell only in countries where animal testing is not required. I believe that supporting animal-friendly companies goes a long way toward the eventual elimination of animal testing. If the parent companies see the successes of their brands who do not test, it’s a win. It’s also a win for the animal-friendly companies to get larger distribution in mass channels by being involved with huge companies. But that is a grey area in the animal loving community, and some do not agree.
If you don’t support companies that are owned by non-cruelty-free parent companies, and are looking for a NYX replacement, check out Pixi Beauty, Pop Beauty, Physician’s Formula, Flower Beauty, Wet n Wild, Milani, Black Radiance or Jordana. You can see a list of cruelty free brands here – look for the symbols to see if the brands have non-CF parent companies, if they are Leaping Bunny certified and if they are 100% vegan or not.
If you’re like me, and welcome NYX Cosmetics as a cruelty free brand, here are some of our recent favorites – written by My Beauty Bunny writer, Jenna Butz:
Cruelty Free Favorites from NYX
NYX has long been one of my favorite cruelty-free makeup brands, and it takes all my willpower not to blow my paychecks at Ulta once a new shade or line comes out. I did recently try a few of NYX’s newer products though, and now I’m sharing some my new go-to’s from the brand.
One of my favorite new lines from NYX is their Liquid Suede cream lipsticks. Specifically, I opted for a bold summer color with Pink Lust. This one is the definition of hot fuchsia, and the slightly blue undertone makes the color pop even more. I did find the formula a little drying, but a light swipe of lip balm underneath got rid of that problem for me. It went on smooth, and one coat really did the trick. I only added a second one to cover any spots I missed the first time. It dries quickly and is pretty lightweight for a liquid lipstick.
Then, there’s NYX’s Faux Blacks eyeliners, which are the perfect twist on everyone’s go-to eyeliner shade. Each shade is slightly blackened so they create the chic look of classic black eyeliner, but with a hint of color that makes eyes pop. I’ve been using the Burnt Sienna eyeliner, which is a deep burgundy. The texture is creamy and smooth, which makes application a breeze. Plus, smudging an “off-black” eyeliner like this one is a fun way to update your eye makeup game.
The most surprising new favorite for me though was the Bright Idea Illuminating Sticks. I’m a huge fan of stick highlighters, but I had never used a bronzer this way. While the line does have highlighters, the Sun Kissed Crush shade made applying bronzer a breeze. I’m always worried about bronzer being too dark or turning me orange, but the sheer coverage of this one made it easy to build (or not build) the color. The stick design is perfect for targeting the color too. I prefer applying this straight from the stick and blending with my fingers, which creates the ideal summer glow.
I can’t wait to try more from these lines! Have you tried any of these? Which are your favorites?

NYX was or maybe still is made in China so I sorta wondered if that affected their claim about being cruelty-free. I had forgotten that the company was acquired by L’Oreal.

A common misconception, but it actually doesn’t matter where the products are made – only where they are sold. Many products are made in China, but it only matter if they are distributed in mainland China (for cruelty free purposes).

Interesting to learn that about items made in China! I too would have assumed that they were not cruelty free then.

I’ve tried the Faux Whites liners and like ’em!

The liners sound especially nice. I’ll have to check them out during my next Ulta run.

I haven’t tried anything from NYX yet, but since going CF, they’ve been high on my to-try list! xx Nikita

NYX is one of my favorite brand, too. I love the Lip Lingerie liquid lipsticks, they have a more comfortable formula compared to other matte liquid lippies.

Today I bought 3 beautiful new products from nyx – all lipsticks- a suede and 2 galactic glosses (or similar, can’t remember). Got them home and there was no cruelty free tag on them where it usually is, next to product life length. It wasn’t anywhere I could see on the tubes. Very concerned about the implications of this.

Hi Heather – I wouldn’t worry too much about the packaging – but I will look into this!
